• In 2006, the Food and Drug Administration approved the first Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) vaccine that is designed to prevent cervical cancer. The HPV vaccine guards against the strains, 16 and 18, that are responsible for most cervical cancers and the two strains (6 and 11) that cause the majority of genital warts.
