Inform and educate the public and communities about border health issues

Activities Include:

  • Public Health Education
  • Health Promotion/Risk Reduction
  • Community Outreach
  • Program planning and implementation

Outcomes (short term):

  • Enhance health and wellness by encouraging individuals to take preventive measures to avert the onset or worsening of an illness or disease and to adopt healthier lifestyles
  • Increased motivation to encourage health and wellness in border communities

Outcomes (medium term):

  • Change  border community behavior to decrease risk of disease

Outcomes (long term):

Contributes to Improved health of populations along the Texas Mexico border


Essential Public Health Service 5:

Provide leadership for priority setting, planning and policy development to support community efforts to assure the health of border communities.

Activities Include:

  • Agenda setting
  • Developing policies and guidelines
  • Legislative activities
  • Planning
  • Healthy People 2020 and Healthy Border 2020 objective-setting activities
  • Community Planning

Outcomes (short term):

  • Change in attitudes towards improving border public health outcomes

Outcomes (medium term):

  • Change  border community environment through broad systemic changes in public policy and community-wide institutions and services

Outcomes (long term):

Contributes to Improved health of populations along the Texas Mexico border


Essential Public Health Service 7:

Link border population to public health and other border community services, and assure access to quality systems of comprehensive care.

Activities Include:

  • Outreach services linking border residents to border public health services

Outcomes (short term):

  • Increase the ability of border residents to access border public health services (immunizations, nutrition, wellness, diabetes  self-monitoring, vector control, general sanitation)
  • Increased access to care

Outcomes (medium term):

  • Increase the % of border residents access to public health services

Outcomes (long term):

Contributes to Improved health of populations along the Texas Mexico border


Essential Public Health Service 8:

Assure the capacity and competency of the public health and personal health work force to effectively address border health needs

Activities Include:

  • Continuing education training/workshops
  • Professional education and training
  • Leadership education and training
  • Community health worker (CHW) training and workshop

Outcomes (short term):

  • Increased knowledge, skills, and abilities to manage/prevent border health issues
  • Change in opinion to a more positive, culturally appropriate, outcome-based approach to solving border health issues

Outcomes (medium term):

  • Change  border community ownership and participation for sustained success in population-based health outcomes

Outcomes (long term):

Contributes to Improved health of populations along the Texas Mexico border
