The information on this page is not a substitute for reading and following the complete rules and law related to the Dyslexia Therapist and Dyslexia Practitioner Licensing Program.  Please read the rules carefully to ensure that you qualify for licensure, as all fees submitted to DSHS are non-refundable.

  • Licensed Dyslexia Practitioner Requirements
    1. A bachelor's degree (or a more advanced degree)
    2. Successful completion of a training program accredited by the International Multisensory Structured Language Education Council (IMSLEC) that includes, at a minimum:
            -45 contact hours of coursework 
            -60 hours of supervised clinical experience 
            -5 demonstration lessons
    3. Successful completion of the Alliance National Registration Examination for Multisensory Structured Language Education: Associate/Teaching Level administered by the Academic Language Therapy Association (ALTA)

    Licensed Dyslexia Therapist Requirements
    1. A master's degree (or a more advanced degree)
    2. Successful completion of an IMSLEC accredited training program that includes, at a minimum:
            -200 contact hours of coursework
            -700 hours of supervised clinical experience
            -10 demonstration lessons
    3. Successful completion of the Alliance National Registration Examination for Multisensory Structured Language Education: Therapist Level administered by ALTA

    Applying for Licensure as a Dyslexia Therapist or Dyslexia Practitioner
    -Submit the application.
    -Submit original college transcripts.  Copies of transcripts will not be accepted.
    -Submit the $161 initial licensing fee.
    -Submit a copy of your current ALTA certification card, if applicable. 
    *If you are not currently certified by ALTA, you must submit proof of completion of your IMSLEC accredited training program and proof of passing the required examination.  If you are currently certified by ALTA, a copy of your certification card will suffice.  Proof of completion of your training program may include copies of certificates showing the number of completed coursework hours, supervised clinical hours, and completed demonstration lessons. If the certificates do not show the specific number of completed hours and/or demonstration lessons, you must submit a letter from the training program outlining these requirements.
    *If your training program is not accredited by IMSLEC, it must be reviewed and approved by DSHS and the Dyslexia Advisory Committee before you may be approved for licensure. In order to be reviewed, the training program must submit any and all relevant documentation verifying that the training program and its instructors meet the requirements of section §140.584 of the rules. Please read the rules carefully to ensure that you qualify for licensure, as all fees submitted to DSHS are non-refundable.
    *If you have a criminal history, you must provide information on all felony and/or misdemeanor offenses. You must include any convictions which are currently on appeal. Failure to disclose your criminal history may jeopardize your application.
