Funding News and Grant Tips

Request for Public Comments: CPRIT’s Proposed Rule Regarding Certification of a Tobacco-Free Policy for Entities Receiving CPRIT Funds
At its November 2, 2011 meeting, Cancer Prevention and Research Institute of Texas's (CPRIT) Oversight Committee approved a proposed rule for publication regarding Certification of a Tobacco-Free Policy for Entities Receiving CPRIT Funds. This rule results from a recommendation made by CPRIT’s Scientific and Prevention Advisory Council to the Oversight Committee.
The proposed rule was published in the November 18th edition of the Texas Register. The public is invited to review the proposed rule and submit comments to CPRIT regarding the procedures and standards that will be implemented by the Institute.  The most helpful comments will provide specific guidance on the area discussed, including best practices that have been used elsewhere. CPRIT will review the comments and, if necessary, make changes to the proposed rule based upon the information received. After the public comment period ends on December 19, 2011, the Oversight Committee will consider a final order to officially adopt the rule. The final order will contain a summary of all comments received on the proposed rule.
Written comments should be submitted to Kristen Pauling Doyle, CPRIT General Counsel, on or before 5 pm on December 19, 2011. The comments will become part of the formal rulemaking record and provide guidance in crafting a final rule. The comments may be faxed (512) 475-2563, sent by e-mail to kdoyle@cprit.state.tx.us or mailed to the Cancer Prevention and Research Institute of Texas, P.O. Box 12097, Austin, Texas, 78711.

HHS Faith-Based, Neighborhood Partners Sought by Center
The acting director of the faith-based office at the U.S. Health & Human Services Dept. (HHS) wants to make sure religious and community groups are aware their input is sorely needed.
Mara Vanderslice Kelly says that HHS' Center for Faith-based & Neighborhood Partnerships is constantly looking for new ways to connect with religious and community partners and support their work.
She offers several insights on how faith-based groups can get involved. The White House's faith-based blog (http://tinyurl.com/44a3c2c) is a great way to see how faith-based and neighborhood organizations across the country are engaging with the federal government on a whole host of issues, Kelly says. The White House Partnerships team is also on Twitter (http://twitter.com/#!/partnersforgood).
The HHS office offers a variety of resources (http://www.hhs.gov/partnerships/resources/index.html) that provide information on how the Affordable Care Act affects a faith-based group's congregants and community members, how to engage with the First Lady's Let's Move Faith and Communities initiative, and combating seasonal flu.
The HHS center also holds regular teleconferences on various subjects. Additional information on these events is available on the center's website at: http://www.hhs.gov/partnerships/.
Kelly says faith-based groups can contact the center at any time to find out how staffers can support their work at Partnerships@hhs.gov or (202) 358-3595.
