Funding News and Grant Tips
Donors... Six Truths about High Net Worth Donors
Not that this is any big surprise, but wealthy donors are a crucial form of support for nonprofit organizations.
What might be a surprise to some in the sector is that high-end donors feel committed to the causes they support but still hold high standards for the organizations addressing those causes.
The Center on Philanthropy at Indiana University conducted a survey for Bank of America Merrill Lynch. The “Study of High Net Worth Philanthropy” was conducted among people with an income greater than $200,000 and/or net worth of at least $1 million.
The survey showed that wealthy donors continued to give, although the recession did put a dent in the amount many donated.
It also offered what the center offers as "points for practice:"
• Share the impact of donor’s gifts and how they make a difference.
• Communicate how gifts will be used effectively and efficiently. Between one-quarter and one-third of survey respondents said an organization’s communications about a gift’s impact is a factor in their giving.
• Be transparent about operations, expenditures and the true costs of doing business. Wealthy donors have high expectations about transparency.
• Engage both spouses/partners. Most giving decisions are collaborative, but many are made independently.
• Honor donors’ wishes and privacy. Some want conspicuous recognition. Others do not.
• Involve donors as deeply engaged volunteers.

Finance... Defending against Form 990 Harassment
Just when you thought it was safe to put away Form 990 nightmares, a new one looms. Stephen Fishman, in his book "Every Nonprofit’s Tax Guide," warns of the possibility of harassment, not by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) but by individuals or groups.
As Fishman notes, these people, often political or ideological opponents, might be trying to disrupt an organization’s operations by creating a large volume for requests.
The IRS imposes severe penalties on organizations failing to comply with disclosure rules, although it does allow organizations to apply for a determination of harassment. The signs of a harassment campaign, according to Fishman, include:
• A sudden increase in the number of requests.
• Multiple requests from the same person.
• Requests made through form letters.
• Requests containing hostile language.
If you believe that your organization is being harassed with a deluge of information requests, Fishman suggests doing the following three things:
• Record the name, address and date of every requester. Organizations may disregard requests for copies in excess of two requests from the same individual at the same address within 30 days.
• Keep written requests on file. These enable you to see if a form letter is being used and can provide evidence to the IRS.
• Record the number and frequency of requests. This enables you to document any sudden increase in requests or any extraordinary requests.
