FIC Offers Annual Grant Writing Workshop in Austin or Now Via Webinar to a Computer Near You!
The Funding Information Center (FIC) is sponsoring a free Grants and Proposal Writing Workshop on Monday, April 11, from 1 to 4 pm. It will be offered at the Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS), 1100 West 49th Street in Austin, or you may attend the three-hour workshop remotely via webinar.
Designed for beginning grant proposal writers, this class presents a general overview of the grant and funding processes as well as the level of detail required in a successful proposal. Each component of the grant writing process will be addressed, including: documenting the need; identifying the target population; writing measurable objectives; and developing a work plan, an evaluation plan, and dissemination plan. By the end of the class, participants will be able to:
* Identify online resources to search for funding.
* Describe the basic sections of a proposal.
* Identify types of documents necessary to include with a proposal.
* Recognize common mistakes of proposal writers.
The presenter will be Michelle Malizia from the National Network of Libraries of Medicine, South Central Region. The workshop is free but pre-registration is required. Registration opens to all participants at 9 am on Wednesday, March 30. To register please e-mail doug.jumper@dshs.state.tx.us and include your name, organization, mailing address, phone number, and whether you wish to attend the workshop in Austin or via webinar. $ AVAILABLE: The NHLBI intends to commit $500,000 total costs in FY 2012 for one award.

PURPOSE: The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) invites applicants to submit grant (R01) applications for a research project to design and test practical tools for identifying individuals at high risk for COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease) and exacerbations of COPD. We anticipate that these tools will consist of a questionnaire regarding risk factors and symptoms combined with a simple physiological measure such as peak expiratory airflow.

Round 7 of Grand Challenges Explorations

$ AVAILABLE: Initial grants will be $100,000 each. Projects showing success will have the opportunity to receive additional funding of up to $1 million.
ELIGIBILITY: To help uncover new ideas, the Grand Challenges initiative seeks to involve researchers around the world, including those who have not typically worked in global health. This includes those with innovative ideas in Africa, Asia, and other parts of the developing world; people working in the private sector; and young investigators.
PURPOSE: The initiative provides grants to scientists, inventors, and entrepreneurs so that they can pursue unconventional ideas with the potential to transform health in developing countries.
