Online... WWW by the Numbers
If you think the World Wide Web offers a lot of possibilities, you might be surprised at just how many. Lots of ‘em.
Speaking during the recent AFP International Conference on Fundraising, Derrick Feldman of Achieve and Slade Sundar of Forte Interactive offered a look at just some of the numbers that exist online.
For example:
* There are more than 234 million Web sites worldwide.
* Of those, more than 126 million are blogs.
* More than 247 billion e-mails are sent each day.
* That is 36 times the population of the earth.
* There are more than 500 million active Facebook users.
* If Facebook were a country, it would be the third largest in the world, after China and India.
* Charitable giving in the United States was $303 billion in 2009.
* Of that, $15 billion was donated online.
* More than 60 percent of all donors research online before donating. This includes those who give online and off line.
* Millennial donors, also known as Generation Y or those born after the late 1970s, comprise about 14 percent of the U.S. population, and they use computers and the Internet extensively.
* They look for more information when they hear about an organization. Their general pattern is information first, do nothing second, volunteer third and donate last.

Human Resources... 10 Elements of Fundraising for Introverts
People often assume that the most successful people in life are the outgoing ones, the ones who love meeting people and are always ready with a smile and a story.
Introverted people have their strong points too, however, and harnessing the energy of those strengths can be helpful in the nonprofit sector.
Speaking at the 48th AFP International Conference on Fundraising, Eva E. Aldrich and Tyrone M. Freeman, associate directors of The Fundraising School of The Center on Philanthropy at Indiana University, talked about fundraising for introverts and recognizing the strengths of introverted people. Rather than focusing on an outer world of people and things, they see an inner world of ideas and images.
In other words, it isn't about being shy or being outgoing, it's about where you put your attention and get your energy.
Aldrich and Freeman discussed the strengths of introverts:
* Relationship building.
* Listening.
* Reflection.
They then discussed ways for introverts to stretch their comfort zones:
* Reaching out.
* Reflecting and the acting.
* Managing their energy.
* Exploring roles.
As far as working with introverted colleagues (or donors), they suggested the following:
* Allow them time for thinking and reflection.
* Make space in the conversation.
* Make time for relationships, and solitude.
