Funding News and Grant Tips

Aetna Foundation, CDC to conduct 'Safety Net Hospital' Study
The Aetna Foundation is supporting efforts by the National Public Health & Hospital Institute (NPHHI), the research affiliate of the National Association of Public Hospitals & Health Systems (NAPH), to conduct a study on ways to help so-called safety-net hospitals provide care for those with no or limited health insurance. The research seeks to help reduce the number of Americans who use safety-net hospitals and emergency rooms as their primary care providers.
The Centers for Disease Control & Prevention will award one grant of $800,000 to conduct research to design and test the feasibility of a surveillance system for congenital and inherited conditions that have low prevalence but high health and economic impact in the U.S. population. Initial design of this surveillance system will focus on three conditions exemplifying different types of disorders: e.g., spina bifida is an example of a neurological condition affecting mobility; muscular dystrophy is an example of a neuromuscular condition; and fragile X syndrome is an example of a condition affecting cognition and behavior. The project will develop a prototype surveillance system that can serve as a model for other low prevalence/high impact conditions.
The system should: help providers describe the epidemiology and features of secondary health conditions associated with these disorders; monitor the progress of public health interventions; develop screening strategies for the detection of new cases; and address potential differences or disparities in the impact of these conditions on the population.
Applications are due March 2. See http://tinyurl.com/6pkg6ey for more information.

* Discover critical traps most NPOs fall into.
* Identify overlooked marketing opportunities.
* Sharpen your vision & goals.
* Start to create a 90-day strategic plan.
