Maps of Counties Reached by CPRIT Prevention Projects Now Available
Organizations interested in applying for a CPRIT Prevention award now have access to portfolio maps showing counties reached by CPRIT’s current Prevention grants. Maps can be viewed at http://www.cprit.state.tx.us/prevention/resources-for-cancer-prevention-and-control/ and are available by cancer type as well as type of program (public education, professional education, clinical service, survivor care, and healthy lifestyle/obesity prevention). Distribution of the Prevention grants portfolio is one of several programmatic considerations discussed by the Prevention Review Council. An expanded description of the Prevention review process has also been added to CPRIT’s website.

CPRIT Adopts Tobacco-Free Policy for Grantees
The Cancer Prevention and Research Institute of Texas (CPRIT) has announced a new tobacco-free policy for all current and future CPRIT grantees.
The policy, adopted by the CPRIT Oversight Committee on January 18, requires grant recipients to certify that they have established tobacco-free policies as a condition of receiving CPRIT funds. This new policy will affect any new grants awarded after July 26, 2012. All CPRIT grantees currently receiving funding must be in compliance with the new policy by August 31, 2012 or the first anniversary of the grant award, whichever is later. Private Funding Opportunities

Building Vaccine Communications Campaigns: Driving the Public to Accurate Vaccine Information

$ AVAILABLE: ASTHO intends to provide funding to support four (4) STHAs up to $15,000 each to implement the ASTHO communications toolkit, which will strengthen their capacity to provide accurate vaccine information to the public.
ELIGIBILITY: To be eligible for the vaccine communications project, the applicant must:
* Be a state or territorial health agency.
* Demonstrate the state or territorial health agency’s commitment to the proposed effort, including how the project further builds capacity for state or territorial health agency’s communication strategies.
* Agree to share resources and lessons learned with ASTHO, Department of Health and Human Services, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, other state and territorial health agencies, and/or partner associations across the country.
* Agree to fulfill all expectations for participation.
PURPOSE: The primary purpose of this RFP is to enhance vaccine safety messaging through policy, programmatic work, media campaigns, and enhanced collaboration.
Grantees will be required to utilize the toolkit, track progress, and share outcomes with other states for potential further implementation. This opportunity will provide STHAs with the necessary tools to create evidence-based communication techniques to provide accurate, timely, and audience-appropriate information about immunizations and vaccines. ASTHO will use the results of this project to disseminate best practices and lessons learned on state specific communication strategies to increase understanding about the benefits of childhood vaccines.

Community Garden and Green Space Development Grants

$ AVAILABLE: Grants will range from $500 to $1,500.
ELIGIBILITY: Applicants must be U.S.-based nonprofit 501(c)(3) organizations. Groups and projects without 501(c)(3) status may apply using an eligible fiscal sponsor.
PURPOSE: The Scotts Miracle-Gro Company, a multinational lawn and garden care company, is accepting applications for its GRO1000 Grassroots Grant awards.
As part of the GRO1000 program, the company's commitment to build a thousand community gardens and green spaces by 2018, Grassroots Grants will be awarded to organizations across the United States working to create edible gardens, flower gardens, and public green spaces at the neighborhood and community levels.

It's All About the Fruits and Veggies Grant Program

APPLICATION DEADLINE: 2/15/12.
$ AVAILABLE: The program will award 20 grant recipients with a check for $150 to be used to purchase soil amendments and fruit and vegetable plantings and $350 in gardening supplies, including composter, planters, tools, and a curriculum guide from the Gardening with Kids Shop. The total award package is valued at more than $500.
ELIGIBILITY: Grants are available to schools, community organizations, and nonprofit programs in the United States gardening with at least fifteen children between the ages of 3 and 18. Schools must be located within a fifty-mile radius of a Jamba Juice store.
PURPOSE: Jamba Juice and the National Gardening Association's KidsGardening are offering the It's All About the Fruits and Veggies grant program to provide schools with gardening supplies, curriculum materials, and plants to help create engaging nutrition and gardening experiences. The program is designed to provide students with opportunities to observe and explore fruit and vegetable production and obtain a deeper understanding and appreciation for these foods in their diet.

State Health Access Reform Evaluation

APPLICATION DEADLINE: 2/22/12.
$ AVAILABLE: Up to $1.5 million in total funding will be available under this call for proposals. There is no predetermined dollar amount for individual grants. Project funding will range from $50,000 to $200,000 to accommodate both quick-turnaround policy analyses of six to 12 months and in-depth research/evaluation studies of 12 to 24 months.
ELIGIBILITY: Eligible applicants include state agencies and other institutions working to engage or employ independent/academic researchers or policy makers working with researchers. The program especially encourages proposals that enlist junior researchers to collaborate with senior research advisers.
Projects may be generated from any number of disciplines, including health services research, economics, sociology, program evaluation, political science, public policy, public health, public administration, law, and business administration. Preference may be given to applicant entities that plan to utilize interdisciplinary teams.
PURPOSE: State Health Access Reform Evaluation (SHARE) is a national program of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation that supports rigorous research on health reform issues by investigators representing diverse disciplines and backgrounds. The program particularly seeks to identify and fill gaps in research related to state-level implementation of the Affordable Care Act, with a focus on provisions that are designed to increase access and coverage. SHARE-sponsored research will provide timely guidance on implementation issues as states consider their unique responsibilities in executing the ACA, and will contribute to the evidence base for future state and national health reform efforts.
The State Health Access Data Assistance Center at the University of Minnesota will provide technical support for the program.

The Cancer Prevention and Research Institute of Texas (CPRIT) has awarded more than $29 million for additional cancer prevention programs and the recruitment of two additional cancer researchers to the State of Texas. The two new researchers have been invited to join the staff of The University of Texas Southwestern Medical School in Dallas and they are: Dr. Kenneth Westover from Harvard University and Dr. Sandi Pruitt from Washington University.
