Casey S. Blass Award Nominations Deadline Extended
The Casey S. Blass award is presented at the Texas HIV/STD Conference to an individual or agency that has made significant contributions to promoting and implementing HIV or STD prevention and/or care and treatment in Texas. This award recognizes the incredible work done by individuals and agencies to promote the health of Texans. The Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS) is extending the deadline to submit nominations for the Casey S. Blass award to June 1.
We recognize that there are many individuals and agencies across Texas who deserves this award and the recognition of their peers at the 2012 Texas HIV/STD Conference. You are encouraged to submit a nomination for the individual or agency that you feel best exemplifies the spirit of the Casey S. Blass award.
The nomination form is available at the conference website found at http://www.dshs.state.tx.us/hivstd/conference/2012/default.shtm. Completed nominations should be submitted to Brenda Howell at brenda.howell@dshs.state.tx.us by June 1.

$ AVAILABLE: In Fiscal Year 2013, approximately $1 million is expected to be available to fund LPG contract(s). The specific dollar amount awarded to each successful respondent depends upon the merit and scope of the proposal and other best value considerations and is at the sole discretion of DSHS. Only projects with potential benefit and improvement to emergency pre-hospital health care or injury prevention will be considered.
ELIGIBILITY: Eligible respondents include department licensed EMS providers, department registered first responder organizations, Regional EMS/Trauma Advisory Councils (RACs), EMS education organizations, and pre-hospital injury prevention organizations. Please see URL for complete requirements.
PURPOSE: The Department of State Health Services (DSHS) Office of Emergency Medical Services Trauma Systems Coordination announces the expected availability of State Fiscal Year (FY) 2013 Permanent Emergency Medical Service (EMS) and Trauma Care Tobacco Endowment funds to provide Local Project Grants (LPG). Funds shall be used to support and improve the development of the Texas Emergency Health Care System and increase the availability and quality of emergency pre-hospital health care.

Private Funding Opportunities
National Projects to Empower Youth with Disabilities

APPLICATION DEADLINE: Concept papers are due 6/1/12.
$ AVAILABLE: Grants range from $10,000 to $75,000, for one to three years. The foundation funds six to 12 grants each year.
ELIGIBILITY: To be eligible, applicants must be U.S. nonprofit 501(c)(3) organizations. Proposed projects must develop youth leadership and employment skills, and/or create tools for employers that help break down barriers and increase employment opportunities; present an innovative approach that leads to measurable employment outcomes for youth with disabilities, particularly for careers in science, technology, and environmental fields; be national in scope, or model projects that have a definite plan for national replication; support U.S. youth with disabilities as the main beneficiary; promote the full-inclusion of youth with disabilities alongside their peers without disabilities; and have a well-defined evaluation and replication plan. Preference is given to projects that take place in Mitsubishi Electric community locations, or involve employee volunteers.
PURPOSE: The Mitsubishi Electric America Foundation provides grants for innovative projects in the United States that are designed to empower youth (birth through college-aged) with disabilities to lead productive lives, giving preference to areas where Mitsubishi Electric facilities are located.
The MEAF national grants program provides funding to nonprofit organizations that are working toward the full inclusion of young people with disabilities in society. Proposed projects should be national in scope and impact, or model projects that can be replicated at multiple sites.
Grants are designed to support innovative projects that help youth with disabilities develop the leadership and employment skills they need to succeed, particularly in STEM fields. MEAF also will consider projects to create tools that help break down barriers to employment and increase job opportunities for young people with disabilities entering the workforce, including returning veterans.

New Connections Grants through Healthy Eating Research

APPLICATION DEADLINE: Deadline for receipt of concept papers is 5/22/12.
$ AVAILABLE: Up to two RWJF New Connections grants will be awarded through the Healthy Eating Research program in this round of funding. Awards will be for 12- to 18-month grants of up to $100,000 each.
ELIGIBILITY: Preference will be given to applicant organizations that are either public entities or nonprofit organizations that are tax-exempt under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code.
Applicant organizations must be based in the United States or its territories. The focus of this program is the United States; studies in other countries will be considered only to the extent that they may directly inform U.S. Policy.
PURPOSE: Healthy Eating Research is a national program of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF). The program supports research on environmental and policy strategies with strong potential to promote healthy eating among children to prevent childhood obesity, especially among lower-income and racial and ethnic populations at highest risk for obesity. Findings are expected to advance RWJF's efforts to reverse the childhood obesity epidemic by 2015. More information is available at http://www.healthyeatingresearch.org.
These grants are to support the research of new investigators representing populations and communities historically underrepresented in childhood obesity prevention research, including researchers from underrepresented ethnic or racial minority groups and lower-income communities and those who are first-generation college graduates.

Novel Approaches to Lupus

$ AVAILABLE: Funding of up to $100,000 per year for a term of up to three years will be awarded for approved projects.
ELIGIBILITY: Both established and new investigators may apply. Applicants should hold advanced degrees and be affiliated with institutions of higher learning in the United States. PURPOSE: The Lupus Research Institute's Novel Research Grant program is accepting applications for novel idea-driven research projects relevant to basic, translational, or clinical investigations in lupus.
Research applications will be judged principally on the novelty of the hypotheses, scientific quality, strength of approach, relevance to lupus, and likelihood of success. Creativity will be valued.
Rationale for the hypotheses proposed rather than amount of preliminary data will be emphasized. Projects related to aspects of the disease that have been less extensively studied and applications from investigators in diverse disciplines, including those who may not have previously worked on lupus, are encouraged.

Research Award in Creativity and Aging

PURPOSE: Sponsored by the National Center for Creative Aging, the Gene D. Cohen Award is designed to recognize and honor the seminal work of Dr. Gene Cohen, whose research has shifted the conceptual focus of the field of creativity and aging from a problem paradigm to one of promise and potential. The award is presented annually to a professional whose research in the field demonstrates the positive attributes and potential for achievement that come with aging.
