Survey Finds Corporate Giving Up in 2011
A majority of corporations worldwide boosted their giving in 2011, a new survey by the Committee Encouraging Corporate Philanthropy (CECP) in association with the Conference Board finds. According to the annual Corporate Giving Standard (CGS) survey, 144 companies responding to the survey in each of the last three years gave a combined total of $15.7 billion in cash and products in 2011. The survey also found that while total corporate giving has not returned to pre-recession levels, with median total giving down slightly from $24.6 million to $24.4 million on a year-over-year basis, 48 percent of the 214 companies that responded to the survey increased their giving by more than 10 percent.
Among companies that increased their giving from 2009 to 2011, direct cash was the most prevalent form of giving, with a median increase of 18 percent. The survey also found that corporate givers continued to tighten their focus, with more than 31 percent of companies dedicating 50 percent or more of their giving to one program area; that employee matching-gift and engagement programs were high priorities; and that companies whose giving has increased since 2009 were likely to be more focused on international giving than their counterparts.
This year's CGS, the first CECP has conducted in association with the Conference Board, generated the greatest number of responses since CECP launched the survey in 2001.
"We are optimistic about the levels of commitment we see from companies," said CECP executive director Charles Moore. "Not only are they continuing to give, but they are also doing so in more strategic and thoughtful ways in partnership with their employees and their communities."

Center for Sharing Public Health Services: Shared Services Learning Community
SOURCE: Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF)
APPLICATION DEADLINE: 8/29/12.
$ AVAILABLE: RWJF will provide two-year grants of up to $125,000 to up to 18 teams that are exploring, implementing and/or improving CJS arrangements between two or more public health agencies. The Shared Services Learning Community will foster a peer learning environment among teams that are taking a systematic approach to CJS arrangements to achieve the dual goals of greater efficiency and enhanced public health capacity.
ELIGIBILITY: Public health officials, policymakers, and other stakeholders.
PURPOSE: Public health agencies play a critical role in our nation’s health system. The dramatic increases in the length and quality of life for so many Americans over the past century are attributed, in large part, to the efforts of public health and the work of public health agencies to keep people healthy and safe. As communities face new challenges, like the increasing burden of chronic disease and lean fiscal environments, and new opportunities like advances in technology, many public health officials and policy-makers are exploring new ways to organize and structure the management and delivery of public health services. One such strategy is the sharing of services, resources and functions across multiple public health agencies and jurisdictions. Referred to as cross-jurisdictional sharing (CJS), these arrangements range from informal agreements around sharing discrete services or programs, to regionalization including the formal merger or consolidation of multiple public health agencies. In order to better understand the opportunity and impact of cross-jurisdictional sharing among public health agencies, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) will fund up to 18 teams across the country that are exploring, implementing or improving cross-jurisdictional sharing arrangements to participate in the Shared Services Learning Community.
