Funding News and Grant Tips

Report Tells Nonprofits to Follow, Interact with Foundations on Social Media
A new report by the Center for Effective Philanthropy finds that while both grant makers and grant seekers use social media, nonprofits are not monitoring the social media postings of foundations or their staff, losing out on opportunities to get some "inside information" on foundation giving priorities, as well as develop connections with such funders (and as a final bonus, stand out from your competitors).
Key findings from the new research include the following:
* The majority of both foundations and nonprofits in the survey are using social media.
* However, few grantees use social media from their foundation funders or their funders' staff.
* Of the small percentage of grantees that do use foundations' social media, the majority of them aren't doing so to interact with foundations: they simply want information about their funder and content that is relative to their work.

What Do Young People (and Potential Donors) Want From Nonprofits
A new report attempts to answer the question "what do young people really want" from the nonprofit to which they are donating -- or may donate -- funds.
The study indicates that while some trends are well known – for example, communicating through smart phones or other devices is a common way to make a connection -- you shouldn't do things just because you think young people like them. The report finds "organizations will be wise not to use the latest technology just for the sake of 'being cool'. Each platform serves its own purpose and way of building engagement, and must have a dedicated strategy to get the most out of it."
The report also recommends "smaller nonprofits would be better off focusing on one or two social networks, than try to keep up with the changing trends and not fully integrating into each medium."
Bottom line: The so-called Millennial generation "wants to build authentic, personal relationships with nonprofits." According to the report, "it is not overstating to say that a big part of the nonprofit sector's future relies on its ability to respond to these young people's charitable inclinations."

Funding Opportunity for the Media-Smart Youth Health Program
The Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development at the National Institutes of Health have made funding available to youth-serving organizations to implement the Media-Smart Youth program. Media-Smart Youth is designed for young people ages 11 to 13. The program helps youth become aware of—and think critically about—the media’s role in influencing their nutrition and physical activity choices. Media-Smart Youth combines youth development principles and practices with current, evidence-based recommendations about nutrition and physical activity.
IQ Solutions, Inc. is soliciting proposals from nonprofit, government, faith-based, and minority organizations that serve youth to actively promote, implement, and integrate Media-Smart Youth into their programming. Up to 10 youth-serving organizations (both nationally affiliated and unaffiliated) will be selected to participate in this initiative for the period of September 2012 through June 2013. IQ Solutions will administer the funding and award a maximum of $15,000 to selected organizations. Each organization will be charged with successfully implementing and promoting the program through their affiliates, chapters, and/or program sites within local communities.
The deadline for applications is September 10, 2012 at 5 p.m. EST. You can access the funding announcement at http://www.iqsolutions.com/NICHD/MSYApplicationForFunding.docx.
