What is hepatitis G (HGV)?

HGV is a virus that causes chronic inflammation of the liver. As this virus is very rare, very little is known. As it appears to be associated with individuals who have an HCV infection, it is thought to be spread in much the same manner as HCV.

What are the risk factors for HGV infection?

  • Contact with infected blood
  • Contact with contaminated needles
  • Intravenous (IV) drug use
  • HCV infection
  • Blood transfusion recipients

How is HGV transmitted?
As HGV is thought to be transmitted in similar ways to HCV, transmission would occur primarily through contact with infected blood.

What are the signs and symptoms of HGV infection?
Like HCV, most infections appear to yield no symptoms.

How can I find out if I am infected with HGV?
Check with your physician if you suspect that you may have hepatitis of any form.

How can HGV be prevented?
Preventative measures include never using IV drugs, avoidance of potentially contaminated needles, and the universal precautions for healthcare professionals.
