2003 - 2004 Texas Influenza Surveillance Information
For the week of 9/28/03 to 10/4/03, the Texas flu activity level, as reported to the CDC, was LOCAL. (For explanation of “local”, please see the “Surveillance” menu for influenza activity level definitions). During this first reporting week of the season, Influenza A H3 has been isolated in Austin by the Texas Department of State Health Services Virology Lab. The specimen was collected 9/29/03. The strain is pending. The Diagnostic Virology Lab at Texas Children’s Hospital in Houston has also identified influenza A. Additionally, influenza-like activity has been reported from a middle school in the Houston area and influenza A has been identified in some of the affected children. There has also been a report of a positive rapid test (flu type not differentiated), from Williamson County.
