2003 - 2004 Texas Influenza Surveillance Information
The latest flu report from the Texas Department of State Health Services for the week ending Nov. 29 classifies flu activity in the state as "widespread." The classification is based on influenza being recorded in at least half of the state's 11 public health regions. Flu was recorded in seven public health regions last week. "Widespread" is the highest occurrence category. Last week was the seventh consecutive week that flu activity has been classified as "widespread" in Texas.
Laboratory tests have confirmed that influenza type A/Panama-like and type A/Fujian-like viruses are circulating in Texas this season. Influenza type B has also been confirmed, but strain information is pending.
This season's vaccine was formulated to protect against type A/Panama, type A/New Caledonia and type B/Hong Kong and is expected to offer some protection against the Fujian strain.
DSHS strongly recommends getting a flu shot.
