Influenza Surveillance Report for MMWR Week 49
The flu activity level for the week ending December 9, 2006 is “sporadic”. Sporadic activity indicates that isolated reports of lab-confirmed flu along with influenza-like illness (ILI) have been reported.
The DSHS laboratory isolated influenza A/H1 from a specimen from Galveston during week 49. Scott and White reported isolating influenza A from a Bell County resident, and Texas Children’s Hospital in Houston reported isolating influenza A from 2 specimens collected during week 49.
Reports were received from all of the 11 Health Service Regions (HSRs) for week 49. All HSRs reported flu activity. HSRs 1, 7, and 11 reported an increase in flu activity from the previous week. For a map of Health Service Regions, please visit the following website:

During week 49, four hospital laboratories in Texas reported conducting a total of 531 influenza tests (both antigen and culture) to the National Respiratory and Enteric Virus Surveillance System (NREVSS) sponsored by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. A small number of influenza A and B positives (by rapid test) were reported. The same four laboratories also reported conducting a total of 478 tests for respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) with 126 positives (26%).
No institutional outbreaks or school closures were reported for week 49.
Seventy-two sentinel providers reported influenza-like illness (ILI) during week 49. Of all patient visits during this week, 4.49% were due to ILI. The baseline for Texas is 3.71%. The baseline is the mean percentage of patient visits for ILI during non-influenza weeks for the previous three seasons plus two standard deviations.
