Influenza Surveillance Report for MMWR Week 41
The flu activity level for the week ending October 13, 2007 is “no activity”. This does not mean that flu is not occurring in the state; rather, flu is occuring at very low levels.
Reports were received from all 11 Health Service Regions (HSRs) for week 41. HSRs 7 and 11 reported an increase in flu activity from the previous week. For a map of Health Service Regions, please visit the following website:

During week 41, seven hospital laboratories across Texas reported conducting a total of 210 influenza tests (both antigen and culture) to the National Respiratory and Enteric Virus Surveillance System (NREVSS) sponsored by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. One culture positive for influenza A (untyped) was isolated from a 2–year–old in Dallas County. One positive antigen test for influenza A (untyped) was also reported. The Air Force Institute for Operational Health (AFIOH) reported a total of 83 specimens cultured for respiratory viruses; one result is still pending, but all others were negative for influenza virus. The Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS) Laboratory did not report any influenza positive specimens for week 41.
No institutional outbreaks or school closures were reported for week 41.
Eighty sentinel providers reported data to the U.S. Influenza Sentinel Provider Surveillance System on patients with influenza-like illness (ILI) and total patients seen for any reason during week 41. Forty-seven (59%) of these providers reported at least one patient with ILI. Of all patient visits during this week, 4.31% were due to ILI.
