2014 National Infant Immunization Week (NIIW), April 26 - May 3

NIIW-2014

NIIW is an annual observance that includes local and state health departments, national immunization partners, healthcare professionals and community leaders to celebrate the positive impact of vaccination on the lives of infants and children. NIIW promotes the benefits of immunizations, especially for children up to 36 months.

Texas immunization rates have fallen below the national average for infants aged 19 to 35 months. Every little Texan should be protected against vaccine-preventable diseases and enjoy a healthy start in life.

Immunizations are considered one of the most important public health advances of the past century and have reduced infant deaths and disability from preventable diseases in the United States.

NIIW provides an opportunity to

  • Highlight the dangers of vaccine-preventable diseases, especially to infants and young children, and the importance and benefits of childhood immunizations;
  • Educate parents and caregivers about the importance of vaccination in protecting their children from birth against vaccine-preventable diseases;
  • Focus attention on our immunization achievements and celebrate the accomplishments made possible through successful collaboration;
  • Step up efforts to protect children against vaccine-preventable diseases and thereby give them a healthy start in life;
  • Encourage better communication between parents and health care professionals;
  • Remind parents and caregivers they need to make and keep needed immunization appointments; and
  • Provide parents and caregivers with a toll-free number, (800) 252-9152, to locate a facility in Texas that offers immunizations through the Vaccines for Children’s program, a federally funded program that provides vaccinations at no cost to children whose parents cannot afford to pay for them.
