TEKS Correlation: This lesson will show students how their behaviors affect their health throughout their lifetime. (TEKS for Health Education: K.7, 1.1, 2.1, 3.1, 4.1, 5.1 )

Overview: This lesson will teach students the importance of protecting themselves against ticks when going outdoors.

Rational: This lesson will benefit students because it will teach them behaviors that will keep them healthy throughout their lifetime.

Duration: 30 minutes

Instructional Objectives:

  • Students will learn how to dress when going hiking, camping, or participating in other wilderness activities.
  • Students will learn how and where to look for ticks.
  • Students will learn what to do if they find a tick on their body.

Resources: Videotape: Dr. Tickedoff & His Tick Patrol, The Lyme Disease Foundation, Inc.

Procedure: Show your students the Videotape, Dr. Tickedoff & His Tick Patrol. After video, use the following questions to guide discussion with your students.

Why do we need to worry about ticks?

  • Ticks carry many diseases that can be harmful to humans. One of these diseases is lyme disease.

How do you protect yourselves from ticks?

  • Wear white or light colored clothing so that if a tick is on your clothing you can see it.
  • If you are wearing pants, tuck your pants into your socks. This prevents a tick from crawling up your leg.
  • Spray bug spray on the parts of your body that are exposed: arms, legs, hands, etc.
  • When you come inside after a day outdoors check all over your body for ticks. They like to hide in warm places, so be sure to check your ears (in and behind), your hairline, your belly button, and your privates as well.

What if you find a tick on your body?

  • Tell an adult immediately.

Assessment: For younger students, you could have them draw pictures about how to protect themselves. Make sure they draw light colored clothing on themselves.
