Regarding Closure of Institute of Beauty and Massage (formerly Austin Schools of Massage)
August 14, 2009
DSHS has received numerous communications regarding the recent closure of the Institute of Beauty and Massage (formerly Austin Schools of Massage) with headquarters in Austin and branch locations in several other Texas cities. All campuses have closed simultaneously, and students will need to contact the Austin headquarters location by mail or phone with any questions regarding their particular situation.
The school's license was surrendered to DSHS on August 13, 2009. The school has indicated to DSHS that all students will be provided partial transcripts.
Once a student receives a partial transcript, the next step is to locate another massage school or program which will accept the student as a transfer and provide the hours needed to reach the 500 hours required for licensure. The student may then apply to DSHS to become licensed as a massage therapist, and will be required to provide both transcripts.
Students should note that prior approval from DSHS is not required to take the exam required for licensure. While waiting to enroll in another school, students may wish to study for or pass their exam in order to expedite the licensure process once they do complete the required 500 hours. More information on the application and examination processes may be found at:
In the future, former students may request copies of their transcripts from the Institute of Beauty and Massage or Austin Schools of Massage from:
Texas Healing Arts Institute
7001 Burnet Road
Austin, Texas 78757
For non-transcript correspondence, please use the following address:
