BIG SPRING – Big Spring State Hospital awarded the RN and LVN of the Year Wednesday during its Annual Nurses Appreciation luncheon at the hospital’s Allred Building Auditorium.
The hospital’s nurse managers host the luncheon each year during Nursing Appreciation Week to show their support for the more than 100 nurses employed at the hospital.
National Nurses Week is celebrated from May 6 to May 12, the birthday of Florence Nightingale.
Suzanne Pearson was named the RN of the Year, and Lisa Dushane was named LVN of the Year.
Dushane has mentored many new LVNs at Big Spring State Hospital, said Chief Nurse Executive Stormy Ward, MSN, RN.
“She is an excellent role model and provides the stability and continuity of care so rare in this day and time,” Ward said. “Her loyalty to this hospital is unsurpassed. She commutes daily from Andrews and arrives with a smile on her face despite the hardship that high gas prices have put on her.”
“Her manager says she takes the extra time to encourage her patients to be compliant with their meds and treatments and she has been known to offer her patients a pedicure complete with foot massage to lift their spirits.”
She also serves on the hospital’s Medication Error Committee and the Nursing Peer Review.
Pearson, who was named RN of the Year, has served as an exemplary charge nurse with a true and steady course set toward patient recovery, Ward said. She began her career at Big Spring State Hospital in 1990 and has worked in many different units, and despite the many changes remains focused on the most important aspect of her job – patient care.
“She has a gift for building trusting relationships with uncooperative patients and possesses great patience and verbal skills,” Ward said. “She has adapted to the many changes in our facilities approach to treatment, meeting each new challenge head on.”
The more than 100 nurses were treated to a picnic lunch complete with door prizes during the noon luncheon. The theme of National Nurses Week 2011 is “Nurses Trusted to Care”.
Big Spring State Hospital is a 200-bed hospital in Big Spring for people with mental illness.
