Admissions are primarily through emergency detention and/or court commitment. The Mental Health Authority may recommend voluntary admissions for adults.
Service Area Description: Brooks, Cameron, Duval, Hidalgo, Jim Wells, Kenedy, Kleberg, and Willacy counties
The mental health authority (MHA) must first screen and authorize for an individual to receive inpatient psychiatric services. Admissions are accepted seven days a week, 24 hours a day. Once an individual is admitted, the patient is transferred to a treatment unit where they will be assessed and treated by the assigned treatment team. The team of professionals will develop an appropriate individualized treatment plan with the patient. If in-patient hospitalization is deemed unnecessary by the treatment team discharge planning is initiated. If in-patient treatment is necessary, the treatment team will continue to provide in-patient psychiatric treatment to prepare the patient for discharge, and/or transfer to an alternate placement. Patients are only discharged to family, an accredited facility, or the MHA.
