The Martha Allen Family Center at Terrell State Hospital
The Martha Allen Family Center is designed to help bring families together. It provides a pleasant, homelike environment away from treatment units, where families and patients can visit and have the opportunity to take part in the therapeutic activities designed to help families.
While using the Martha Allen Family Center, families may choose to sit and talk and enjoy a quiet visit in the large living room; use the resource library’s brochures, books, and videotapes to learn more about mental illness, substance abuse, and behavior problems; talk with treatment team members; stay for an overnight visit (call staff for overnight visit guidelines); prepare a home cooked meal in the kitchen and eat together in the dining room; or picnic on the patio.
Families may be referred for overnight stay by the patient’s treatment team. Contact your relative’s assigned social worker who will provide assistance. Five suites are available for overnight stays. Each suite contains a bedroom with two twin beds, a living room and a bath. Linens are furnished and a washer and dryer are available. A playroom is also available for families with children.
Persons wishing to make reservations should call 972.551.8784 or 1-800-538-7535. The Center staff is available from 8:00 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. M – F and 9:00 a.m. – 7:30 p.m. on Saturday/Sunday and holidays. The Martha Allen Family Center is free of charge to any family members who need the facility.
Educational groups called “Family Talks” are held each Monday night at 6:00 p.m. (except for major holidays) at the Martha Allen Family Center. Families are encouraged to attend. Please call 1-800-538-7535 to confirm your intention to attend.
Funding for the renovation of the Family Center was provided by the hospital and through a generous donation from Volunteer Services Council of Terrell State Hospital. The 74th Texas Legislature renamed the facility, The Martha Allen Family Center, to honor the long-time volunteer and financial supporter of the hospital.
