In observance of Mental Health Awareness Month in May, the Texas Department of State Health Services Mental Health and Substance Abuse Division and the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) - Texas held a statewide poetry contest open to adults with or in recovery from mental illness and their adult family members.
2013 marked the second year for the contest, with over 80 poems submitted from all across Texas by adults living with and recovering from mental illness, their friends, and their families. Read poems from the 2012 contest »
The contest judges would like to extend their sincere thanks to each poet who submitted their work for consideration in the 2013 contest, and we hope to read more of your work in 2014. It was clear that each poem submitted was a heartfelt expression of living with and recovering from mental illness. Reading your poems was a privilege.
