What: 14th Texas HIV/STD Conference

When: Dec. 14 - 18, 2004

General sessions: 8 a.m. - 11:30 a.m. Dec. 14; 8 a.m. - 11:30 a.m. Dec. 15 and 16; and 8:30 a.m. - 11:30 a.m. Dec. 17. Breakout sessions, panel discussions in afternoons on Dec. 14, 15, and 16.

Where: Renaissance Austin Hotel, 9721 Arboretum Blvd., Austin

Why: Exchange information among HIV/STD prevention, intervention and clinical care providers and form partnerships to serve those living with and affected by HIV, AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases (STDs)

Who: Some 800 health professionals from throughout Texas. Sponsored by the Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS), The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio Medical School and School of Nursing, Center for Health Training, National Network of STD/HIV Prevention Training Centers and Texas/Oklahoma AIDS Education and Training Center

8:30 a.m., Wednesday, Dec. 15
Guadalupe G. Lara , M.S.W., C.S.W., Children's Hospital of Michigan, Allen Park, Mich., and Lori Kohler , M.D., University of California at San Francisco, San Francisco, Calif., on prioritizing diversity in HIV prevention and care; Steven A. Jenison , M.D., New Mexico Department of Health, Albuquerque, N.M., and Natalie Cramer , Austin, on harm reduction programs targeting injection drug users at risk for HIV

Texas Commissioner of State Health Services Eduardo Sanchez, M.D., will address the conference at 8 a.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 15.

King , author, Chicago, Ill., on the lives of African American men on the “Down Low” (men who have sex with men but do not identify as gay)
