The Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS) is asking doctors, nurses and other health care professionals to volunteer to provide care for evacuees who have moved inland from the Texas coast to escape Hurricane Rita.
State Health Services Commissioner Eduardo Sanchez said there is an urgent need for health care professionals licensed or certified in Texas to volunteer to assist in triaging and treating evacuees in general population and special health needs shelters located throughout the state.
Those who can volunteer should call DSHS at 1-800-942-5540. Those with Internet access can volunteer online at www.dshs.state.tx.us.
Volunteers should be able to “self-sustain” for two to three days.
