May 15, 2008
A Texas Department of State Health Services investigation has determined that homemade ice cream served at a Relay for Life fund raising event in Center on May 2 caused more than 70 people to become ill with salmonellosis.
Symptoms of salmonellosis can include nausea, vomiting, fever, diarrhea and abdominal cramps.
The illness is caused by salmonella, a bacterium.
Salmonellosis usually lasts only a few days. Most people who have it recover without medical attention.
Salmonella often is associated with raw or undercooked poultry or eggs.
Center is in Shelby County in East Texas.
