25th Annual Texas Emergency Medical Services Conference 2010

WHEN: Nov. 19 – 24, 2010 (see schedule)
WHERE: Hilton, 500 E. Fourth St., and Austin Convention Center, 500 E. Cesar Chavez, Austin
WHO:

More than 2,500 emergency care workers from throughout Texas to attend annual education conference sponsored by the Texas Department of State Health Services.

Emergency medical technicians, paramedics, emergency department physicians, trauma nurses, firefighters and law enforcement officers will learn the latest in emergency patient care in more than 190 classes.

HIGHLIGHTS:

Rescue workers will learn and practice industrial rescue techniques such as rappelling, 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Nov. 20, at the Tom Miller Dam on Lake Austin Blvd. They will learn wilderness rescue from 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Nov. 21, on the Barton Creek Greenbelt near Mopac (Loop 1) and Capital of Texas Highway.

Rescue workers will learn about responding to radiological emergencies, practice cardiac arrest and advanced medical life support techniques, learn anatomy in a human cadaver lab, and learn about procedures for monitoring heart arrhythmias, as well as practice intubation on pig tracheas, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Nov. 20 and 21, Austin Convention Center.

Nearly 170,000 square feet of exhibit space will be filled with emergency medical equipment and vehicles, including six rescue helicopters and 30 ambulances, 2 p.m. to 7 p.m., Nov. 21, and 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., Nov. 22, and 8 to 11 a.m. Nov. 23, at the Austin Convention Center.

Hands-on classes feature an animal anatomy lab, a human cadaver lab focusing on specific parts, rescue techniques and ultrasound for EMS, on Nov. 22, and Nov. 23.
