WHAT: The Texas Department of State Health Services is hosting a 19-city Ready or Not? outreach tour to encourage Texans to prepare for emergencies, whether man-made or natural.

WHEN: 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Monday, June 6

WHERE: Walmart, 4000 New Boston Rd., Texarkana

WHO: Emergency preparedness staff from DSHS will be at the event with partners from local fire and police departments, emergency management offices, public health departments and other community organizations. Experts will be available to answer questions.

VISUALS: The Ready or Not? event will be held under a 20-foot by 20-foot tent with informational displays about emergency planning. Visitors will be able to watch a new video series called Surviving Disaster: How Texans Prepare. The videos show real-life stories of people who have experienced a disaster, and the lessons they learned to plan for the next emergency. A sample disaster supply kit will be on-site. It includes essential items such as a battery-powered radio, flashlights, canned food and bottled water. Free checklists and waterproof document bags will be distributed, and people can make free copies of their important documents. They can also take the official Severe Weather Quiz that tests people’s knowledge about natural disasters, essential emergency supplies and what to do in an emergency.

WHY: As part of the agency’s mission to improve health and well-being, DSHS is educating Texans about the importance of being prepared for emergencies.

WEB: For more information and to watch the new video series, go to www.TexasPrepares.org, or for Spanish, www.TexasPrepara.org. The sites help people build a custom plan step by step.
