DSHS to Offer Metals Testing in Freeport

Loading...

News Release
April 5, 2012

State health officials will be in Freeport May 3 - 6 to collect urine samples from residents in certain neighborhoods who want to be tested for metals exposure (see attached map).

The testing is being conducted by the Texas Department of State Health Services at the request of the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality and in response to community concerns about metals exposure.

Approximately 300 of the urine samples provided will be randomly selected and analyzed for cobalt, molybdenum, and nickel, all of which have been detected in air and residential soil.

DSHS staff also will be in Freeport April 9 -13 to distribute flyers and go door-to-door to let residents know about the May testing opportunity. DSHS staff will carry credentials identifying themselves as state officials.

The urine collection clinic in May will be at the Freeport Historical Museum, 311 East Park, in Freeport. Residents can pick up urine collection cups with sample collection instructions at the clinic and can drop off their urine samples for testing. No appointment is needed, however urine samples must be provided to DSHS staff before 6 p.m. May 6.

Collection will take place at the following times:

  • May 3, 4 - 7 p.m.
  • May 4, 10 a.m. - 7 p.m.
  • May 5, 10 a.m. - 7 p.m.
  • May 6, 1 - 6 p.m.

DSHS staff will provide educational materials and answer questions about the potential health effects of metals exposure. The information obtained from this testing will help DSHS and TCEQ identify whether further public health or environmental actions are necessary. Each individual tested will be provided a copy of his or her test results by the end of July. A report summarizing the findings will be released by DSHS later this year.
