GENERAL SANITATION

Program staff perform annual environmental health inspections of child care, resident and day youth camps, schools and migrant-labor housing facilities. The staff also provides technical guidance and assistance in the investigation and control of disease vectors including flies, mosquitoes and rodents. Staff members investigate citizen complaints in all general sanitation areas and provide technical assistance and guidance on request. In addition to the areas described above, the General Sanitation program responds to citizen complaints or requests for technical assistance concerning environmental health conditions in hotels, motels, public swimming pools, mobile home parks and other facilities used by the general public.

FOOD AND DRUG

Program staff inspect food manufacturers, processors, wholesalers, retail food service establishments, food, drug or medical device salvage dealers, manufacturers of drugs and related complaint situations and provide consultations and guidance medical devices and tanning salons. Program staff members investigate food to individuals and industry in program matters. Food and drug program staff also respond to disaster situations involving the contamination of food products by spills, floods, fires, etc., to assure that unsafe products are removed from the consumer market. In May 1995, staff inspectors began to conduct annual inspections of retail food establishments in areas not served by local Health Departments.

MEAT SAFETY ASSURANCE PROGRAM

The mission of the Meat Safety Assurance Division is to protect the public health by assuring the people of the state that products bearing the Texas mark of inspection are produced from healthy animals that are slaughtered and prepared in a sanitary manner, contain no harmful ingredients, and are truthfully labeled.  Veterinarians and inspectors implement meat inspection laws providing for mandatory inspection and regulation of the slaughter and processing of food products and meat for distribution in this state. This program is vital to assure that the meat-consuming public of Texas receives a wholesome unadulterated product.

MILK AND DAIRY

Program staff inspect producer dairies, transport tankers, milk processing plants and milk by-product plants.  They review dairy barn designs and investigate consumer complaints involving milk products.  Staff members provide assistance to dairymen and to the milk industry.

OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH

Program staff investigate various indoor air environmental exposures from chemicals such as formaldehyde, lead, mercury, and pesticides. Staff members monitor asbestos abatement programs in public buildings and schools through the Federal NESHAP and AHERA programs. Technical assistance and consultation services are provided to industry, public officials and the general public, industry, public officials and the general public.

RADIATION CONTROL

Program staff conduct routine surveillance and licensing inspections of medical X-ray and radioactive material licensee facilities and operating procedures to ensure that radiation exposures to personnel and the general public are maintained at acceptable levels. Staff members participate in safety and emergency drills at nuclear power facilities and are assigned to disaster teams which respond to accidents or spills involving radioactive materials.
