Cancer Epidemiology and Surveillance
The Department of State Health Services is authorized under the Cancer Control Act of 1979 to collect information on each cancer patient seeking treatment at a hospital, clinical laboratory, or cancer treatment center wtihin the state. The Texas Cancer Registry is an "incidence only" registry and collects only the basic items necessary to accurately assess cancer incidence. Data submission undergo both external and internal quality control procedures to ensure data reliability.
Monitor the burden of cancer in the statewide population;
Investigate public concerns of suspected excess of cancer due to environmental or other factors;
Identify population subgroups at particular risk for certain kinds of cancer, so they can be targeted for prevention and control programs;
Provide information and education about the incidence of cancer in various regions of the state;
Provide annual reports of cancer mortality data which summarizes the state's experience by cancer site, age, sex, race/ethnicity, and geographic region.
