Purpose

The Cancer Epidemiology and Surveillance Branch (CESB) maintain a population-based cancer incidence registry with the goal of collecting timely and complete data on all cancer cases diagnosed in the state.  The primary functions include:

  • Maintaining a statewide cancer incidence reporting system
  • Monitoring data accuracy, reliability and completeness through systematic quality assurance procedures
  • Analyzing cancer incidence and mortality data
  • Disseminating cancer information
  • Facilitating studies related to cancer prevention and control

The CESB operates in a two-tier system consisting of a central and four regional registries.  The central registry establishes and monitors registry procedures to assure data quality, maintains the registry data base system, performs all data analyses, produces publications of the results, and responds to requests for data.  The regional registries monitor reporting compliance, process in-coming data, provide training and technical assistance to reporters, perform quality assurance activities and disseminate cancer data.  The Region 8 office is responsible for facilities in regions 8 and 10.
