School Health Program LogoComponent Description:

Provide school nutrition programs that adhere to the U.S. Dietary Guidelines for Americans and Texas Nutrition Policy to achieve nutrition integrity.  School nutrition services offer students a variety of nutritious and appealing meals that accommodate the health and dietary needs of all students.  They can also serve as a learning laboratory that mirrors classroom nutrition education, and a resource for nutrition-related community services.  Qualified child nutrition professionals provide these services.

Nutrition Policies:

The Texas Department of Agriculture (TDA), Food and Nutrition Division, has authority over the child nutrition program for Texas public schools as a supplement to federal policies. In March of 2004, TDA issued the Texas Public School Nutrition Policy to promote a healthier school environment. To access the school nutrition policy, go to:

Student Benefits:

  • ensures that schools offer nutritious, appealing choices whenever and wherever food and beverages are available on campus
  • offers a school breakfast program that provides a healthy start for the day that may not otherwise be available
