The Board currently issues three licenses and several specialty recognitions. LMSWs who meet the requirements may receive recognition as an "Advanced Practitioner". Recognition for independent practice of non-clinical social work is available to LMSWs and LBSWs who meet the requirements. The board may also grant supervisor approval to a qualified licensee. A board supervisor may supervise other licensees in certain board approved roles according to the license held by the supervisor.

All new applicants must pass the board's jurisprudence examination.

Persons who hold a social worker license in another state who wish to practice in the state of Texas must apply for a Texas license and meet all of the requirements for the license desired. The board does not issue licenses by reciprocity. The board does accept qualifying examination and supervised experience by endorsement. Please see endorsement description below.
