2000 U.S. Standard Population Information

For 1999-forward cancer incidence and mortality data, the Texas Cancer Registry age-adjusts rates to the new 2000 U.S. standard population, in place of the 1970 U.S. standard population. This causes cancer rates to appear higher (for most types of cancer), even though the number of cases may be the same or similar as in past years. This is simply a result of using a new population standard, and may not reflect any real change in the rates. To learn more about age-adjusted rates and the change to the new population standard for 1999 and future years, please see the brief article, "Change in Population Standard for Age-Adjusted Rates." If you are using TCR rates adjusted to the 2000 U.S. standard population and would like to make comparisons with TCR rates adjusted to the 1970 U.S. standard population, please contact us at 1(800) 252-8059, in Texas or (512) 458-7523 outside of Texas. You may also e-mail for information.
