Job Description:

  • Helps WIC participants successfully breastfeed their infants.
  • Teaches classes on the advantages of breastfeeding and the management of normal breastfeeding experiences.
  • Provides information and promote breastfeeding among peers; addresses specific concerns of expectant mothers, and correcting misinformation which may prevent a pregnant woman from breastfeeding.

Job Description:

  • Under the guidance and supervision of the WIC Director the Dietitian will provide individualized counseling to participants identified at a high nutritional risk.
  • The Registered Dietitian will also provide administrative support to the nutrition education goals of the project, including development and revision of high risk policies and protocols.
  • Will assist the WIC Director with the WCS program, peer reviews, training of WIC staff, site audits of policy compliance and other special projects as assigned.
Duties and Responsibilities:
  1. Provides individualized nutrition counseling to participants identified at a high nutritional risk. Counseling is provided according to protocols developed by Department of State Health Services Program and documented per protocol in participant’s record. Time is scheduled based on the needs of individual clinic.
  2. Develop curriculum and prepare manuals, visual aids, course outlines, and other materials used in teaching.
  3. Conduct facilitated discussion nutrition education classes.
  4. Development and reviews of high risk protocols, development of staff training on nutrition-related topics and nutrition assessment.
  5. Provides administrative support to the nutrition education goals of the project, including the collection of data for high-risk participants, scheduling of high-risk appointments and on site audits of nutrition education and policy compliance.
  6. Plans, organizes, and evaluates nutritional assessment of client eligibility for the special supplemental food program for Women, Infants and Children (WIC).
  7. Develops and implements plans of care based on assessments of health care needs.
  8. Aids in the development and implementation of Nutrition Education Plan.
  9. Ensures full compliance with the WIC Program policies and procedures and other regulatory requirements. 1
  10. Administers proper use and control of in stock formulas.
  11. Evaluates the WIC Program on an ongoing basis and ensures staff compliance with local policies and procedures.
  12. Completes state required modules in a timely manner.
  13. Attends state and local meetings as required.
  14. Helps monitor the WCS Program 15.Performs other duties as assigned
Qualifications, Skills, and Experience:
  1. Bachelor of Science degree in Nutrition or Dietetics from an American Dietetic Association approved program.
  2. 1-3 Years related experience in community or public health nutrition or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  3. Bilingual (English/Spanish) preferred
  4. Knowledge of nutrition needs for infants and children and women during prenatal, postpartum, and breastfeeding stages.
  5. Effective counseling and education skills; ability communicate effectively orally and in writing.
  6. Required license:
    1. Must be a Registered Dietitian 
    2. Must be a Certified Dietitian
    3. Must complete Level I and Level II certificates within 90 days of employment.
  7. Work Hours: 8-10 hours per week or at least 24 hours per month

Job Description: Under the supervision of the WIC Clinic Supervisor and/or Lactation Consultant, the WIC Breastfeeding Peer Counselor (PC) provides breastfeeding counseling and support for WIC clients before and during their breastfeeding experience. The Peer Counselor is expected to provide services to all clients who have been referred to them by WIC Certifying Authorities or the Lactation Consultant based on breastfeeding need in an individual or group setting. The Peer Counselor may be required to be available to WIC clients outside usual clinic hours and outside the WIC environment. The Peer Counselor must be able to attend the mandated State Agency-developed Peer Counselor training prior to counseling WIC participants.
