Breastfeeding Training
Annual Texas WIC Nutrition/ Breastfeeding Conference

Sponsored by

The Department of State Health Services (DSHS) and Texas Association of Local WIC Directors (TALWD)

The Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS) offers breastfeeding courses to prepare health-care providers to support breastfeeding women and infants. DSHS believes that a positive, proactive approach to breastfeeding promotion and support is achieved through team effort. DSHS encourages all health-care workers who work with breastfeeding women and infants to attend these trainings.

General Information on Breastfeeding Trainings

Course space is limited, so register as early as possible. If you do not receive a confirmation letter within one week of sending your registration, please call or e-mail to make sure we have received it. The deadline for registering for a course is two weeks before the course begins in most cases. The Clinical Lactation Practicum requires a six week advance registration.

Nursing mothers: A room will be provided if you need to pump during this time. Please bring a pump, attachments, and a small cooler with frozen “blue ice” packs to keep your expressed milk cold.

Special Needs: If you have special physical or dietary needs, please let us know at least two weeks in advance of the course.

Confirmation Notice: Confirmation notices are sent out weekly, usually on Thursday or Friday, via e-mail. If you have not received a confirmation letter before the course, please call or e-mail to make sure you are registered. A courtesy reminder email is sent 2-3 weeks prior to class and will include the status of your payment.

Registration Fee: The registration fee is due prior to the start of class. Attendees who are not employed by a Texas WIC agency will not be admitted into the class without payment. Registration fees should be in the form of a check, money order, or cashier's check and should be received at least three weeks prior to class to allow for receipt and posting. If you fail to show up for your scheduled class, you will still be held responsible for the registration fee.

Registration fee$60 each for:

  • Peer Counselor Management Workshop, or
  • Clinical Lactation Practicum
