Breastfeeding Training
Nutrition/ Breastfeeding Conference
Sponsored by
The Department of State Health Services (DSHS) and Texas Association of Local WIC Directors (TALWD)
Objectives
- To increase health-care providers' knowledge of the need to promote and support breastfeeding
- To increase health-care providers' knowledge of breastfeeding management
- To promote consistency of information given to breastfeeding mothers
- To encourage the adoption of policies that promote and support breastfeeding
- To encourage communities to work together to promote and support breastfeeding
These courses are designed to prepare health-care providers to appropriately and adequately support breastfeeding women and their infants. The material is presented at a level to fill the gaps in professional education. DSHS believes that a positive, proactive approach to breastfeeding promotion and support can only be achieved through team effort. Thus, all levels of health-care workers directly affecting breastfeeding women and their infants are encouraged to attend.
Questions or comments about DSHS breastfeeding training courses should be directed to: Hellen Sullivan

Course space is limited, so register as early as possible. If you do not receive a confirmation letter within two weeks of sending your registration, please call or e-mail to make sure we have received it. The deadline for registering for a course is two weeks before the course begins.
Babies: Breastfeeding mothers are welcome to bring their nursing babies younger than 6 months to the class. We do ask for babies to be taken from the room if they become fussy or active. The other attendees and the instructors may find it very difficult to concentrate on the topic being presented. You may bring a sitter with you to care for your baby while you focus on the presentation. We understand your desire to provide your baby with the best nutrition, but also need to respect the education environment. A room will be provided if you need to pump during this time. Please bring a small cooler with frozen “blue ice” packs to keep your expressed milk cold.
Special Needs: If you have special physical or dietary needs, please let us know at least two weeks in advance of the course.
Confirmation Notice: Confirmation notices are sent out weekly, usually on Thursday or Friday, via e-mail. If you have not received a confirmation letter before the course, please call or e-mail to make sure you are registered.
Registration Fee: The registration fee is due prior to the start of class. Attendees who are not employed by a Texas WIC agency will not be admitted into the class without payment. Registration fees should be in the form of a check, money order, or cashier's check and should be received at least three weeks prior to class to allow for receipt and posting. If you fail to show up for your scheduled class, you will still be held responsible for the registration fee. If you are on the waiting list and notified that a space is available and you accept that spot but do not show up, you will still be held responsible for the fee.
Only paid attendees will receive a certificate of attendance or continuing education certificate at the end of class.
Cancellations: Ideally, cancellations should be received at least two weeks prior to the class. Refunds for cancellation will be made up to two weeks prior to class. After that date, no refunds will be made. Individuals registered for the course who do not show up will not be given a refund if they have not cancelled in advance.
