Rates & Formulae
Rates and ratios are calculated for a specific time period, typically a calendar year or a multiple of calendar years. Unless otherwise specified, all rates provided in this report are for Texas residents and are for the time period January 1, 2004 through December 31, 2004.
- Age-specific rate: Number of events occurring to a specified age group per 1,000 population of the specified age group: Number of events / Number in age group * 1,000
- Cause-specific death rate: Number of deaths due to a specific cause per 100,000 population: Number of deaths from a specified cause / Estimated midyear population * 100,000
- Crude birth rate: Number of live births per 1,000 population: Number of live births / Estimated midyear population * 1,000
- Crude death rate: Number of deaths per 1,000 population: Number of deaths / Estimated midyear population * 1,000
- Crude divorce rate: Number of divorces per 1,000 population: Number of divorces / Estimated midyear population * 1,000
- Crude marriage rate: Number of marriages per 1,000 population: Number of marriages / Estimated midyear population * 1,000
- Fetal death rate: Number of fetal deaths per 1,000 live births plus fetal deaths: Number of fetal deaths / (Live births + fetal deaths) * 1,000
- Fetal death ratio: Number of fetal deaths per 1,000 live births: Number of fetal deaths / Number of live births * 1,000
- General fertility rate (GFR): Number of births per 1,000 females ages 15 through 44: Number of live births / Female population 15 - 44 * 1,000
- Infant death rate: Deaths of individuals less than 1 year of age per 1,000 live births: Number of deaths < 1 yr / Number of live births * 1,000
- Maternal death rate: Number of maternal deaths per 100,000 live births: Number of maternal deaths / Number of live births * 100,000
- Neonatal death rate: Number of individuals dying at less than 28 days of age per 1,000 live births: Number of infant deaths < 28 days / Number of live births * 1,000
- Perinatal mortality ratio: Sum of fetal deaths plus neonatal deaths per 1,000 live births: (Fetal deaths + neonatal deaths) / Number of live births * 1,000
- Perinatal mortality rate: Sum of fetal deaths plus neonatal deaths per 1,000 live births plus fetal deaths: (Fetal deaths + neonatal deaths) / (Fetal deaths + Number of live births) * 1,000
- Post-neonatal mortality rate: Number of infants dying at 28 to 365 days of age per 1,000 live births: Number of infant deaths 28-365 days / Number of live births * 1,000
- Pregnancy rate: Number of pregnancies (live births, fetal deaths, and induced abortions) per 1,000 females ages 15 through 44: (live births + fetal deaths + induced terminations of pregnancy) / Female population 15-44 * 1,000
Total pregnancies are underreported because fetal deaths of less than 20 weeks gestation are not required to be reported.
- Rate of natural increase: The difference between the crude birth rate and the crude death rate: Crude Birth Rate - Crude Death Rate
