2006-2007 Season Summary

Influenza Surveillance Report for MMWR Week 50

The flu activity level for the week ending December 16, 2006 is “regional”. Regional activity indicates that 2 or more but less than half of the regions are experiencing an increase in ILI and lab-confirmed (by culture) flu has been identified in those regions.

The DSHS laboratory isolated influenza from 5 specimens collected during week 50. Influenza A/H1 was isolated in specimens from Tarrant, Bell, and Grayson Counties. Influenza B (Malaysia/2506/2004-like) was isolated in a specimen from Starr County. Scott and White reported isolating flu A from a Bell County resident and a Brazos County resident, and Texas Children’s Hospital in Houston reported isolating flu B. HSR 1 reported culture confirmed flu A from Lubbock County. The Air Force Institute for Operational Health (AFIOH) reported culture confirmed flu A in recruits at Dyess Air Force Base (Taylor County) during week 50.

Reports were received from all of the 11 Health Service Regions (HSRs) for week 50. All HSRs reported flu activity. HSRs 4/5N, 7, and 8 reported an increase in flu activity from the previous week. For a map of Health Service Regions, please visit the following website:
