Texas State Board of Examiners of Professional Counselors Renew Your License - Requirements

At least 45 days prior to the expiration of a regular license or a regular license with art therapy specialty designation, the board will send notice to a licensee that includes the expiration date of the license and instructions for renewing the license. The notice shall require the licensee to notify the board of any changes to information necessary to keep records current.

The board shall not renew a license until it receives the renewal fee and all renewal requirements have been met. The board shall issue a renewal card to a licensee who has met all requirements for renewal. The licensee must display the renewal card in association with the license.

2 year Professional Counselor renewal fee: $106

Inactive to Active Status

A person must notify the board in writing to return to active status. A person seeking active status must successfully complete the Texas Jurisprudence Examination. Active status shall begin after receipt of proof of successful completion of the Texas Jurisprudence Examination, completion of 24 hours continuing education within the two years preceding reinstatement of active status, and payment of applicable fees.

Continuing Education and the Texas Jurisprudence Exam

For the 2-year renewal cycle, the licensee will need to complete 24 hours of continuing education including the completion of the Texas Jurisprudence Exam. Out of the 24 hours, 4 hours will be required in ethics with one hour being the Jurisprudence exam.

The Texas Jurisprudence exam will become mandatory for license renewal as of January 1, 2007. The Jurisprudence exam is a no-fail assessment designed to show that the licensee is familiar with board rules. It is available on-line through the board website and can be taken at any location with web access for a $40 fee.

For the most complete listing of continuing education requirements please visit the board’s continuing education rules at TAC §168.141.
