2008 - 2009 Texas Influenza Surveillance Information
Influenza Surveillance Report for MMWR Week 43
The influenza (flu) activity level for Texas for the week ending October 25, 2008 was “sporadic.” Sporadic activity indicates that isolated reports of lab-confirmed influenza along with influenza-like illness have been reported. During week 43, four (1.2%) specimens tested by NREVSS laboratories in Texas were positive for influenza. The first culture-confirmed influenza B was reported during week 43. Flu is occurring in the state at a very low level.
Reports from Health Service Regions
Reports were received from all Health Service Regions (HSRs) for week 43. HSRs 7 and 11 reported an increase in flu activity compared to week 42; all other HSRs reported the same level of flu activity compared to week 42. For a map of Health Service Regions, please visit the following website:

During week 43, ten hospital laboratories across Texas reported conducting a total of 330 influenza tests (antigen, culture, and PCR) to the National Respiratory and Enteric Virus Surveillance System (NREVSS )sponsored by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Two hundred and fifty-seven antigen detection tests for influenza were performed; four tests in Harris and Nueces counties were positive for influenza A/not subtyped. No positive PCR results were reported. One positive culture for influenza B was reported in a 13-year-old resident of Webb County. Positive point-of-care rapid tests for influenza were reported by providers throughout the state (see county map below).
Influenza–Associated Pediatric Mortality
No influenza–associated pediatric fatalities were reported during week 43.
School Closures and Institutional Outbreaks
No school closures or institutional outbreaks were reported during week 43.
Sentinel Provider Surveillance Network
Sixty–two sentinel providers in Texas reported data to the U.S. Influenza Sentinel Provider Surveillance System (SPSN) on patients with influenza–like illness (ILI) and total patients seen for any reason during week 43. Of the 61 providers who reported seeing patients during this week, 25 (41%) saw at least one patient with ILI. Of all patient visits during this week, 1.56% were due to ILI.
