Storage/Preservation Prior to Shipping Store slants at an ambient temperature after overnight incubation at 35°C–37°C with ~5% CO2

Appropriate solid medium that supports growth of Neisseria spp.

Specimen Labeling
  • At least two patient-specific identifiers required (e.g., patient full name, date of birth, medical record number)
  • Three patient identifiers are preferred.
  • Identifiers on specimen label must exactly match submission form. (e.g., abbreviated name on label and full name on form is not acceptable).

Shipping and Specimen Handling Requirements
  • Ship according to Dangerous Good Regulation, IATA, and/or CFR 49.
  • Ship at ambient temperatures.
  • Category B Biological Substance, UN3373 shipping requirements apply.
  • Handle as infectious agent using universal precautions. 
  • Triple-contain in accordance with federal shipping regulations. 
  • Submitters are responsible for packaging and shipping specimens according to regulatory requirements.

Interferences/Limitations
  • Organisms must be viable for culture studies
  • Improper storage or shipping temperatures limit organism recovery.

  • Insufficient specimen growth
  • Unacceptable specimen type or source
  • Improper shipping/storage conditions
  • Expired media or collection container
  • Discrepancies between specimen label and submission form
  • Incomplete, missing, or illegible submission form.
Additional Information Isolates from sterile sites identified as Neisseria meningitidis will be serotyped.
