Austin State Hospital supports its mission of “Partnering to find solutions towards wellness” by providing professional training programs that support learning and the recovery of people admitted with mental health related illnesses.

Training programs work in collaboration with qualifying schools, universities, colleges in the following specified fields of study. 

  • Art Therapy (masters level internship)
  • Dance/Movement Therapy (masters level internship)
  • Drama Therapy (internship level)
  • Medical Laboratory Science Program (13-week instruction)
  • Music Therapy (internship level based on AMTA-approved criteria)
  • Nursing (clinical rotations)
  • Occupational Therapy (COTA fieldwork, MOT fieldwork)
  • Psychology (doctoral level)
  • Physical Therapy (PT internship level)
  • Social work (graduate level)
  • Therapeutic Recreation/Recreation Therapy (fieldwork, practicum & internship levels)

Experiential Therapies

You will be put in contact with the internship supervisor for the program you are requesting.  The ASH internship supervisor will provide additional information and send required criteria, forms, and the intake process to you and your school internship supervisor. 

Medical Laboratory Science Program

Nursing

You will be put in contact with the nurse educator. The nurse educator will provide details of approved training programs and entrance requirements. The nurse educator will coordinate the intake process for students and work as the liaison between ASH and the nursing program.

Occupational OR Physical Therapy
