The highest risk group to die by suicide are Texans with a mental health or substance abuse disorder. Therefore, we are currently working to establish a gold standard, to be called Suicide Safer Care Centers, for Local Mental Health Authorities (LMHAs) with the goal of ZERO suicides in that care system. We are developing policies and procedures, revamping our risk assessment process, including safety planning and new follow-up procedures and providing evidence based training and technical assistance to bring the care system up to National best practices standards, based upon the new recommendations from the National Action Alliance for Suicide Prevention. You may view these recommendations from the clinical care and interventions taskforce of the alliance in more detail in the state of the art report released in 2011 entitled, “Suicide Care in Systems Framework” (PDF), or on the Action Alliance website at www.nationalactionalliance.org.
We are working in partnership with the LMHAs on this exciting and cutting edge approach, which is based on research and national recommendations. We highly recommend that you take a few moments to familiarize yourself with the new 2012 National Strategy for Suicide Prevention.
