Breastfeeding Courses

Sponsored by

Health and Human Services (HHS) Women, Infants and Children (WIC) Special Supplemental Nutrition Program and Texas Association of Local WIC Directors (TALWD)

The Texas WIC Program offers breastfeeding courses to prepare health-care professionals to support breastfeeding women and infants. We believe that a positive, proactive approach to breastfeeding promotion and support is achieved through team effort. We encourage all health-care workers who work with breastfeeding women and infants to attend these trainings.

In-Person Breastfeeding Classes

The Texas WIC Program collaborates with the Texas Association of Local WIC Directors (TALWD) to provide current, evidence-based lactation education to ensure consistent, accurate information across all levels of health care professionals.

Based on feedback from attendees, we have developed new classes with less lecture time and more interaction throughout the day. These new classes will be launched in July and August 2019. The Principles of Lactation Management (POLM) and Lactation Counseling and Problem Solving (LCPS) classes will no longer be offered.

TALWD handles all registration aspects of the in-person breastfeeding classes. Credit card payments are accepted online and payment is expected at the time of registration. Available classes can be found at www.TALWD.org.

Courses Available

  • Lactation Principles (LP) is a one-day course addressing the fundamentals of breastfeeding, baby behavior and counseling which utilizes various case studies and activities to enhance learning. No pre-requisite to attend.
  • Advanced Lactation Management (ALM) is a two-day course addressing advanced breastfeeding concerns. Knowledge gained during lectures will prompt participants to apply critical thinking and problem-solving skills learned in both classes to case studies and various skill-based activities. Pre-requisite: Principles of Lactation Management OR Lactation Principles no more than 3 years prior.
  • Clinical Lactation Practicum (CLP) is a two-day course providing an opportunity for direct observation of International Board Certified Lactation Consultants (IBCLCs). This opportunity is free and offered to current Texas WIC employees only. Pre-requisites: POLM or the new Lactation Principles class AND LCPS or the new Advanced Lactation Management class no more than 5 years prior.
  • Clinical Lactation Skills for RNs is a one-day course and provides an opportunity for direct observation, instruction, and hands-on demonstration of breastfeeding support and counseling. Students shadow experienced outpatient-based IBCLCs over the period of one full day in a Lactation Support clinic.

If you have questions regarding registration or payment, use the “Contact TALWD” link in the upper right corner on www.TALWD.org.
