2005 - 2006 Texas Influenza Surveillance Information

The flu activity level for the week ending April 29, 2006 remains sporadic. Very limited flu activity was reported in all regions of the state.

Reports were received from 10 of the 11 Health Service Regions (HSRs) for week 17. None of the HSRs reported an increase in flu activity. A decrease in flu activity was reported in HSRs 1, 2/3, 6/5S, 8, and 9/10. Activity remained about the same in HSRs 4/5N and 11. HSR 7 did not report. During week 17, no culture confirmed influenza A was identified in the state.

Culture confirmed influenza B (Hong Kong) was identified in a 30 year-old resident of Travis County from a specimen collected on April 25th.

No institutional outbreaks or school closures were reported.

Data from the Sentinel Provider Surveillance Network (SPSN) shows a higher percentage of ILI in recent weeks (up from week 15); however, fewer providers have reported, indicating that ILI overall has declined.
