2005 - 2006 Texas Influenza Surveillance Information
The flu activity level for the week ending May 6, 2006 remains sporadic. Very limited flu activity was reported in 9 of the 11 regions of the state. HSRs 2 and 3 reported no flu activity. Only two weeks remain in the flu-reporting period for this season.
Reports were received from all 11 Health Service Regions (HSRs) for week 18. Only HSR 11 reported an increase in flu activity, specifically in Hidalgo and Nueces Counties. A decrease in flu activity was reported in HSRs 1, 2/3, 4/5N, 7, and 9/10. Activity remained about the same in HSR 8. HSR 6/5S was unable to determine if flu activity had increased or decreased. During week 18, no culture confirmed influenza A or B was identified by the DSHS laboratory or reported by any other laboratories in the state.
Three culture confirmed cases of flu were identified recently by the DSHS laboratory from specimens collected during weeks 16 and 17. One was isolated from a patient in Galveston County and identified as influenza A (H1). The second was isolated from a patient in Travis County and identified as influenza B (Hong Kong). The third was isolated from a patient in El Paso County and identified as influenza B (Hong Kong).
No institutional outbreaks or school closures were reported for week 18.
