2005 - 2006 Texas Influenza Surveillance Information

NOTE: Based on new information, the flu activity level for week 42 has been amended from regional to sporadic.

The flu activity level for CDC week 43 ending October 29, 2005 is sporadic. Activity has remained the same from the previous week.

Influenza-like activity was reported in Health Service Regions (HSRs) 2, 3, 6/5S, 7, 8, 9/10, and 11. HSR 1 still reports no flu activity. One region did not report. Three HSRs (2, 3, and 7) report an increased level of activity over the previous week. HSR 8 and 11 report a decrease in activity. For a map of Health Service Regions, please visit the following website:

http://www.dshs.state.tx.us/regions/state.shtm

The DSHS lab has received two additional influenza A isolates; one in a 46 year-old woman from Temple, and the other in a 4 year-old girl from Corpus Christi. Subtype results are still pending. Both isolates will be sent to CDC for further antigenic characterization.

Data from the Sentinel Provider Surveillance Network (SPSN) indicates a slight increase in influenza-like illness (ILI) from the previous week (Week 42).
