Dear School or Child-Care Official:
Effective immediately, the Texas Department of Health (TDH) is recommending
routine administration of hepatitis A vaccine for children in 23
additional Texas counties, including Gonzales County. As of
August 1, 2005, children born on or after September 2, 1992,
who attend schools or child-care facilities in Gonzales County
will be required to receive two doses of hepatitis A
vaccine administered on or after their second birthday.
Pursuant to Health and Safety Code §81.023, TDH shall require hepatitis A
vaccine for children in high incidence geographic areas specified by TDH. This
requirement shall remain in effect indefinitely and cannot be discontinued
without prior authorization from TDH.
Please note that revisions to the existing school rules are currently
proposed to the Texas Board of Health. If these proposed rules are adopted,
school and child-care facility requirements, including hepatitis A vaccine, may
change.
For additional information regarding school or child-care facility
immunization requirements, please contact Monica Gamez, Immunization Compliance
Coordinator, at (512) 458-7284, or (800) 252-9152.
Sincerely,
Patricia E. Feagin, M.A.H.S.
Acting Director
